Hearing Horses, Chasing Zebras is thoughtful and well written. It will serve as a great conversation starter, perfect for churches, small groups or personal edification. The author takes a unique approach to an age-old subject using Occam’s Razor as the standard for evaluating both the Theory of Evolution & Creationism. For readers unfamiliar with the principle of Occam’s Razor, it is a problem-solving technique. This book provides a brief but clear primer on how the Razor works. The title is derived from the idea that, if you were in 17th century London and heard hoof beats, the most reasonable explanation would be that you are hearing a horse, not a zebra. The zebra is plausible but not as likely. From this point, Budds begins to examine specific areas pertaining to both science & theology. The book does not ignore scientific facts, rather it depends on & embraces them. Additionally, the author is well informed in biblical literature, including context and interpretation. This is the author's first book, after having some psychology articles published. It is not perfect but as first books go, it's very impressive. Overall, however, the book makes a rather well-trod path interesting again. It does so with the logic, respect and humor that is, unfortunately, so often lacking in modern Christian authors. I highly recommend this book to anyone, Christian or not, as a valuable addition to your library.
